And Some Flower Cafe Review

“Excuse me! I am hunting for…” “Oh! Here it is!”

If you are looking for a sweet little bouquet filled with wildflowers but need a little pick-me-up while you wait this is the place to come to.  Just off of Memorial Drive in the Northwest of Calgary is a small little café that helps with all of your caffeine and floral needs.   Today we are visiting a little hidden gem just tucked away outside of Kensington but the question is:  Is it worth finding?  Lets look at this together.

It’s raining flowers!

Atmosphere

The place is hard to find unless you know what you are looking for but that’s okay because this has proven to be a fun treasure hunt.  As soon as you walk inside you are met with dried blooms hanging from the inside of the entryway.  When you walk in further you find a bench with buckets full of a variety of flowers.  Next you see the work station and a cooler full of bouquets.  I do believe they call this a sprinkle of flower power.  The flower designs themselves seem like wildflowers fresh out of a cottagecore garden.  The rest of the café has clean lines, pastries and desserts are the stars on display, and everything else is very minimal.  I love the fact that the tables are wooden but not so much paired with the stools that have no backs on them.  That does not help with long-term stays especially when you have plugins that welcome those who would bring their laptops.  The wall décor is simple and sweet with the fake flowers.  Without a doubt it is a good Instagram post but it would only be a onetime thing.  I wish there was something a little more innovative than just tossing old stuff on a wall.

They look so Wild!

Service

The ladies there are so lovely.  They have smiles that would brighten anyone’s day and welcome you to stay for a long time (despite the not-so-nice chairs).  They are patient and let you sit while you decide on your order.  They are ready to answer any questions you have regarding the food or the flowers.  Sadly, it is clear that they are understaffed and it takes a while for you to get your food and drink.  That said, if they can afford to be patient with their customers then they deserve some of that in return.

Dessert anyone?

Food

Delightful!  They make the ordinary extraordinary.  Their menu seems simple but again it goes with that cottagecore look that they have.  Everything they have is house-made and makes you feel like you are basking in your own home.  This proves that comfort food has its place in the world of cuisine.  I decided to order their Avo-egg Dutch baby and a lavender-Ade sparkling drink.  The savoury of the Dutch baby compliments the sweetness of the lavender drink.  When it came to the beverage, I worried that it might be overly floral but that is not the case.  It is quite sweet but the florals are subtle and not made to taste like a body wash.  It was actually quite refreshing with a lovely delicate taste.  The Dutch baby is filled with fresh flavours, the zesty tang of the dill mixed with the tartar sauce is yummy, and the warm hug you get from the egg makes it a well-balanced dish.  The pancake itself is very filling and heavy so make sure you are hungry for it.

The Food and the Book

Book

The best book to go with this restaurant is, “The Apothecary’s Garden.”  It goes with this book because one can just picture the protagonist whose name is Lavender make beautiful bouquets exactly like the ones they make here.  They also have several drinks with her namesake on them (lavender) and the food they have available kind of show the simplicity you might find in an eatery out in Belleville, Ontario (where this book takes place).  *Spoiler Alert* Arlo Snook (Lavender’s half-brother) opens an eatery with his wife Sophie at the end of this book and they also sell Lavender’s flowers there.  So I like this think that their little restaurant turned into this in our modern day-and-age.  *End Spoiler*

It’s hard to miss this sign!

Final Thoughts/Ratings

7/10

This place is a hidden gem.  The food and flowers are absolutely beautiful and this place truly make them shine.  And it is the good people there who make it shine as well.  The downfall is that I wonder if this place is a little too hidden.  It was hard to find it and you have to be able to know what you are looking for.  The décor is lovely but there are things about that is out of place and in desperate need of an upgrade.  The service was kind of slow but at the same time I know it was not their fault.  That is why I gave these folks a 7/10.  They are good but I know they can be better.
